Symbol.isConcatSpreadableĪ Boolean value indicating if an object should be flattened to its array elements. Symbol.hasInstanceĪ method determining if a constructor object recognizes an object as its instance. Symbol.asyncIteratorĪ method that returns the default AsyncIterator for an object. In these Symbols' descriptions, we will use language like " Symbol.hasInstance is a method determining…", but bear in mind that this is referring to the semantic of an object's method having this Symbol as the method name (because well-known Symbols act as "protocols"), not describing the value of the Symbol itself. The static properties are all well-known Symbols. Well-known symbols do not have the concept of garbage collectability, because they come in a fixed set and are unique throughout the lifetime of the program, similar to intrinsic objects such as Array.prototype, so they are also allowed in WeakMap, WeakSet, WeakRef, and FinalizationRegistry objects. This is like the difference between Function.name and "Function". In MDN and other sources, well-known symbol values are stylized by prefixing For example, Symbol.hasInstance is written as This is because symbols don't have actual literal formats, but using Symbol.hasInstance does not reflect the ability of using other aliases to refer to the same symbol. Well-known Symbols allow the customizations to be "invisible" from normal code, which typically only read string properties. However, as more operations are added to the language, designating each operation a "magic property" can break backward compatibility and make the language's behavior harder to reason with. For example, the JSON.stringify function will attempt to call each object's toJSON() method, and the String function will call the object's toString() and valueOf() methods. Prior to well-known Symbols, JavaScript used normal properties to implement certain built-in operations. ![]() ![]() For example, if a constructor function has a method with Symbol.hasInstance as its name, this method will encode its behavior with the instanceof operator. ![]() They are known as well-known Symbols, and their purpose is to serve as "protocols" for certain built-in JavaScript operations, allowing users to customize the language's behavior. ![]() ![]() He served at Boston Harbor Lighthouse from 1716 until his death in 1718. George Worthylake served as the first lighthouse keeper in the United States. The earliest record of a named individual in a formal capacity as a lighthouse keeper was William, a member of the now famous Knott family, who was appointed to the South Foreland lighthouse near Dover, England, in 1730. In the US, periodic maintenance of the lights is now performed by visiting Coast Guard Aids to Navigation teams. In most countries, the training of lighthouse keepers falls within the jurisdiction of the Navy or Coast guard. Those who continue to work as lighthouse keepers today perform building maintenance, repair work to broken and blind buoys, geographic realignment of wayward navigational aids off the coast, and technical maintenance on automated systems. Įlectrification and other technological advancements such as remote monitoring and automatic bulb changing began to appear in the 1960s and over the course of the late 20th century made paid resident keepers at the lights unnecessary in certain areas, while simply altering their responsibilities elsewhere. ![]() It meant stations that were operated solely by men, rather than accommodating keepers and their families. "Stag light" was an unofficial term given to some isolated lighthouses in the United States Lighthouse Service. īecause most lighthouses are located in remote, isolated or inaccessible areas on islands and coastlines, it was typical for the work of lighthouse keeper to remain within a family, passing from parents to child, all of whom lived in or near the lighthouse itself. They were also responsible for the fog signal and the weather station, and played a major role in search and rescue at sea. Historically, lighthouse keepers were needed to trim the wicks, replenish fuel, wind clockworks and perform maintenance tasks such as cleaning lenses and windows. Lighthouse keepers were sometimes referred to as " wickies" because of their job trimming the wicks. A lighthouse keeper or lightkeeper is a person responsible for tending and caring for a lighthouse, particularly the light and lens in the days when oil lamps and clockwork mechanisms were used. ![]() ![]() ![]() In my distress I said, "No one can be trusted."įor all the good things he has done for me? This could be extremely beneficial in treating especially significant burn injuries, which require longer and higher-quality wound coverage in order to have a better chance of healing. It is possible that skin grafts taken from these pigs could be used to protect burn wounds for up to twice as long as other types of skin grafts that do not come from patients themselves. Recently, this team of researchers developed a breed of special, miniature pigs that do not have the molecule which causes primates to so quickly reject organ and tissue implants from swine. One doctor who founded a team of investigators at Massachusetts General Hospital has devoted at last 30 years to researching methods to encourage human bodies to accept organ and tissue implants from various animals, including pigs. Additionally, naturally-bred pigs have a molecule present in their skin which primate bodies typically reject at a quick rate. The trouble with using grafts from deceased donors is that they are both short in supply and costly to obtain–also a problem when it comes to artificial skin grafts. These alternatives include using skin grafts donated by deceased individuals, and using skin grafts from animals like swine. Often, when there is not a sufficient amount of undamaged skin from a patient’s own body to cover the wounds, doctors turn to alternatives for treatment–but these almost always lead to eventual rejection by the patient’s body. The breakthrough involves using skin from special, genetically-modified pigs to protect open burn wounds. One recent breakthrough in the treatment of burn injuries has doctors and scientists excited at the possibilities it could present for victims of serious burn accidents. This can make it important for burn injury victims who were injured in a fire or explosion due to the negligence of others to consult a personal injury attorney to see if they can pursue financial restitution. However, these treatments can often be expensive. Fortunately, burn injury treatment is improving by leaps and bounds every day leading to more positive outcomes for victims and families alike. It can be difficult for both the victims and their family members to deal with the emotional and physical scars that such serious burn injuries can cause. We’re not there yet, but fresh or powdered tilapia skin could become a mainstay in the burn wards and emergency departments of hospitals around the world. It looks like these helpful fish are our friends too, not just food.Victims of burn injuries typically face a long and painful healing process. Traditionally, its skin has been seen as wastage, making it extremely cheap - 75 cents less than traditional bandages per application. This treatment is also incredibly cost-effective, thanks to our extensive farming of the tilapia. They also found that the fish skin had pain relief properties, and in some cases could just be left on the burned area until it began to scar. However, in 2017, doctors in Brazil found the skin of the tilapia to contain large amounts of collagen proteins. The properties of collagen mean that collagen dressings can be useful in treating second and third degree burns, as it stimulates new tissue growth and attracts cells to the wound, helping it to heal.ĭoctors have traditionally taken collagen from harvesting healthy skin to help with wound care and burn treatment. This proetin helps bind the skin together and gives it it’s elasticity. And now scientists have found a use for the in the medical sector, helping to treat burn victims.Ĭollagen is a protein found in the skin and other connective tissues. They basically eat the stuff that other fish won’t touch. They’re also handy at cleaning up our waters, due to their penchant for eating plants like duckweed and other problematic marine plants. Found in various locations around the world, we farm almost 1.5m tonnes of them every year, but when it comes to tilapia, the fun doesn’t stop at the dinner table. ![]() You might not have come across one before, but they’re an extremely helpful and popular fish. ![]() ![]()
